Families Connected:
This is a support group for adoptive and foster families located in eastern Nebraska or western Iowa with at least one child of African-American descent, as well as families who are preparing to adopt a child who is African, African American or bi-racial. We plan fun events for the entire family to enjoy. We also meet to discuss issues such as racism, hair and skin care, black history and other issues faced by transracial families. Education is a key factor when you are an adoptive or foster parent. African American children will face a lot of challenges in their lives, perhaps even more so if they are being raised by parents of another race. As parents we need to do our best to try and prepare them and ourselves.

Next Meeting:
What? Dealing with Racism among Family Members
When? Saturday July 12, 2008 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm
Where? Nebraska Children's Home Society, 4939 S. 118th Street, Omaha
Lunch (pizza from Valentino's) will be included at no charge to
you, but we need you to RSVP right away so we can order enough pizza.
Our discussion topic will be "Dealing with Racism Among Family Members
and Friends," and we will have a facilitator on hand (details to be
announced later). Child care will be available for infants and
toddlers (donations requested), but we are not planning any activities
for school-age children. Because of the nature of this topic, the
discussion will be geared toward parents rather than children.
RSVP by July 8 to Tonya Moore via e-mail or by calling (402) 451-0787.
We are looking forward to seeing you soon!
